Integrating Mind, Culture, and Community for Health Equity

IMG_8850.jpeg

Samuel Nuñez, PhD (he/him) is a public health psychologist (non-clinical) and researcher committed to understanding how culture, identity, and social context shape health outcomes among Latino communities, particularly Latino sexual and gender minority populations. He earned his PhD in Psychology from Grand Canyon University and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.

Dr. Nuñez’s research integrates psychological approaches with public health practices to explore how cultural norms, stigma, and behavior influence health and well-being—focusing on HIV prevention, treatment adherence, and mental health among Latino sexual minority men. Grounded in community-engaged and qualitative methodologies, his work bridges scientific inquiry and lived experience to promote culturally responsive and equitable care.

As a first-generation scholar, Dr. Nuñez is passionate about mentorship, teaching, and community partnership. He teaches psychology courses at the college level and collaborates with local organizations to co-design initiatives that center Latino voices and advance health equity. In his teaching, he emphasizes reflection, inclusivity, and the connection between psychological theory and real-world experience.

Outside of academia, Dr. Nuñez enjoys traveling, reading, watching documentaries, and spending time with his family and friends. He’s also passionate about music, trying out different restaurants, and creative storytelling—often using these mediums to inspire dialogue around identity, resilience, and belonging. His work and life are grounded in a simple belief: meaningful change begins with listening and grows through shared understanding.

At the core of his professional and personal philosophy is a deep commitment to authenticity, empathy, and empowerment—values that guide his approach to research, mentorship, and community engagement. Dr. Nuñez often reflects on the principle that shapes both his work and worldview:

“Rise with purpose, lead with empathy, and let your truth create space for others to do the same.”
